Ruby Gemstone

Ruby is also known as Manik. It is a powerful gemstone that can bring incredible positive changes in your life with its enchanting red hues. Ruby is known as the "King of Gemstones,". As per astrology Gemstone ruby is associated with Sun and this planet is famous for enhancing vitality, strength, and leadership.

PROPERTIES OF RUBY

When it comes to Ruby, the intensity and purity of its signature reds are where the value lies. Ruby's 'pure' reds seldom exist, as it is a diochroic (two-coloured) gemstone. Even the 'finest' Ruby will still only be around 80 percent pure red, with secondary splashes of orange, pink, purple and violet. While a gemstone's colours should ideally remain beautiful in any light source, Rubies usually look their best when viewed outdoors in natural light or under incandescent lights.

While both Ruby and Sapphires are classed as Type II gemstones (gems that typically grow with some minor inclusions in nature that may be eye-visible), Rubies are usually more included and smaller. While an eye-clean clarity is desirable, just remember that perfection in nature is a scarce commodity indeed; an eye-clean Ruby is extremely rare.

Rubies are available in a huge array of shapes and cuts with ovals being the most common. It is also cut 'en cabochon', not only for its star varieties, but also for examples whose clarity makes them unsuitable for faceting.

HOW TO CARE FOR RUBY

As with all jewellery, keep each piece in a separate box our pouch if you can, or in a box that stops items rubbing against or scratching others. Scientifically, only Sapphire and Diamond would be tough enough to scratch Ruby, but it's always best to keep pieces separate. As always, remove jewellery before exercising, doing housework or when using any harsh chemicals like bleach. When not in use, ensure your Rubies are kept away from heat sources and out of direct sunlight too, though don't worry about wearing your jewellery on sunny days - this is just a storage precaution.

What are the spiritual and healing properties of the ruby gemstone?

The ruby gemstone is believed to possess powerful spiritual and healing properties. It is thought to enhance one's energy and vitality, making it an excellent stone for those who feel physically or emotionally drained. In terms of emotional healing, the ruby is said to promote passion and love, helping to open the heart and allowing one to experience deep and meaningful connections with others. It is also believed to aid in the healing of emotional wounds, providing support and comfort during times of grief or heartbreak.

What are rubies?

Scientifically speaking, rubies are actually exactly the same as sapphires - only, rubies are a red type of sapphire. The precious gemstone is the same variety of corundum as sapphires, and while sapphires can be found in a full spectrum of colours, red sapphires gained their own identity: rubies. The red hue of a ruby is caused by the presence of chromium.

Why choose a ruby ring?

Just like their blue and multicoloured sapphire counterparts, rubies measure 9 on the Mohs scale, making them the perfect choice for an engagement ring. Whilst there are so many gemstones to choose from for your engagement ring, it is important to choose a stone that is durable enough to be worn everyday, without the threat of chipping or breaking. Rubies also offer an intense and rich lustre, like few other gemstones.

Aside from the technicalities that make rubies a suitable choice for engagement rings, the beauty of a rich, red ruby makes them perfect for a symbol of passion, devotion and love. Pairing a bold, red ruby with yellow gold makes for a beautiful contrast, the bright colours bearing a certain exotic appeal. In recent years, diamond and sapphire engagement rings have undoubtedly become the most popular choice, making a ruby a beautiful choice for a slightly more unusual, unique engagement ring.

How much is Ruby worth?

The value of Ruby is denoted by the 4 c’s of quality, just like Diamonds. Color is by far the most influential of these when it comes to judging quality in a Ruby. The more vivid and pure red a Ruby is, the more valuable. The renowned “pigeon’s blood” red colors mined in Mogok in Burma are considered the finest and most coveted and reach upwards of $100,000 per carat for the larger, finest pieces. However, in recent years a similar color has been discovered in the deposits of Mozambique which have transformed the Ruby market. These are much more affordable, selling for approximately 50% of the Burmese counterparts in their finest grades. Not all Ruby is valuable. Ruby can also sell for very little if it is of low quality or heavily treated. Low grade Cabochon cuts for example can sell as low as $10 per carat whereas as bead qualities sell for pennies on the dollar.

Color

As with emeralds, the most important factor when evaluating a ruby is its color. The deeper, and more intense the color, the better. Basically we measure color using three criteria: hue, tone, and saturation

Cut

A ruby’s cut is one of the primary factors that determines it’s value as well as it’s overall beauty and appeal. The structure of the ruby crystal is the primary determinant in how it is cut. Rubies can be cut into many shapes and sizes. Various factors are considered when taking a raw ruby deposit and shaping ruby gemstones from it.

Clarity

The best clarity grade for ruby is “eye-clean,” which means no inclusions are visible to the naked eye. When evaluating the clarity, experts consider the size, number, location, and overall visibility of the inclusions. Inclusions are a natural consequence of crystal growth.

Carat Weight

Rubies are commonly found in 1 carat sizes. Stones that weigh over 2 carats are considerably rarer and are prized much higher than sapphires of equal size. Rubies of over 3 carats, such as this exceptional specimen in our store are extremely rare. These are considered far rarer than diamonds of the same weight.
